frequently asked questions

  • Families connect with Midwest College Consulting at different stages of high school. Some students begin working with us early as they plan their academic path and extracurricular involvement, while others seek guidance later as they begin building a college list or preparing applications.

    • Students commonly begin working with us during:

      • 9th–10th grade for early planning

      • 11th grade for application readiness, exploration and list development

      • 12th grade for application and essay support

  • A college consultant provides personalized guidance throughout the college search and application process. We help students develop a balanced college list, plan their academic and extracurricular activities, navigate standardized testing, stay organized during application season, and craft thoughtful essays that reflect their goals and experiences.

  • High school counselors provide valuable support to many students, often while managing large caseloads. Our work complements that support by offering individualized guidance, deeper college research, and consistent one-on-one advising throughout the process.

  • No consultant can guarantee admission to any college. Admissions decisions are made by the colleges themselves. Our role is to help students present their strongest possible application and build a thoughtful college list that includes a range of excellent options.

  • Yes. We guide students through brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising their personal statements and supplemental essays. Our goal is to help students clearly communicate their experiences, interests, and perspective in their own authentic voice.

  • Not at all. While some families begin planning early, many students start working with us during junior year when college exploration and applications become more immediate. We tailor our support to the student’s timeline and goals.

  • Meeting frequency varies depending on the student’s grade level and where they are in the process. Early planning may involve periodic check-ins, while juniors and seniors often meet more regularly as they build college lists, work on applications, and prepare for deadlines.

  • We help families understand the financial aid process, identify scholarship opportunities, and use tools to estimate college costs. While we do not complete financial aid forms for families, we provide guidance and trusted resources to help them navigate the process.

  • The best way to begin is with an introductory consultation. During this conversation, we learn about the student’s interests, goals, and timeline, and discuss how we can support them throughout the college admissions process.
